The choice of bit and how it fits is not as generic as you may think it is. The importance of having a well-fitting bit is not spoken about as much as it should be; however, having a bit that does not work optimally for your horse can impact your horse's performance. Factors that should be taken into consideration when choosing a bit for your horse are the size of the bit, the thickness of the mouthpiece, and the height of the bit (when it is connected to cheekpieces).
Depending on the bit you choose, they will all act in a slightly different way and put pressure on different parts of the horse's mouth. The most popular bit would be a standard snaffle bit. Snaffle bits can either come with a standard single join or double jointed (french link). Eggbutt style bits are also one of the more popular varieties of bits. Eggbutt refers to the shape of the rings on the side of the bit, which are shaped similarly to an egg, hence the name. Eggbutt style bits can minimise pinching on the side of the horse's mouth, which can happen occasionally with loose ring bits. Full cheek bits typically are used in young horses who lack balance and direction. The full check pieces can aid in turning and steering the horse. Half cheek bits share a similar purpose and can assist with the turning of the horse. D ring bits also provide a similar effect that full cheek bits too however are a good option for younger riders. D ring bits do prohibit the bit being able to move through the horse's mouth and decrease the possibility of getting caught on anything (which poses a risk with full cheek and half cheek bits) hence being a great option for kids who may not always be conscious of where their pony’s head is.
