Horseshoe studs are designed to give the horse more traction, however, there is a fine line. Too much traction in the ground can cause more harm than good as there is increased strain on your horse's joints and tendons. Horseshoe studs come in a variety of styles and sizes for many different conditions. It is recommended that you start with small horseshoe studs and then if you feel your horse needs more traction, you can upgrade from there.
If you are not experienced with studs and have not used them before, we recommend talking to your farrier and veterinarian to ensure that your horse's hooves are suitable to use studs comfortably. Talking to an experienced rider, like a coach, can help advise you on how to insert studs, what to look out for when using them and how to safely remove horseshoe studs.
It is important to note that horseshoe studs should only be inserted right before use and then removed from the horse’s shoes immediately afterwards. It is also important to consider the safety of your horse whilst wearing studs. Make sure your horse is protected by boots, bell boots and stud girths/belly guards to ensure that your horse does not hurt themselves whilst wearing studs.
Studs, although usually simple and straightforward to put in, can prove tricky and with the use of a few helpful handy tools, such as a stud hole cleaner or a stud spanner, life can be made a lot easier.
