What are worms?

Worms are internal parasites and they live off the nutrients that the horse supplies them with. Due to worms feeding off the horse's nutrients, they end up depleting the horse. Horses with worms can display various symptoms such as poor condition and trouble keeping weight on, rough coat, lack in performance, tail rubbing, and more, so it is vital that as horse owners, we worm routinely and do faecal egg counts as necessary. 

Different types of worms 

There are many different types of worms which horses can get including; 

• Pinworms/Threadworms 
• Bots 
• Tapeworms 
• Roundworms 
• Red worms 
• Blood worms 

If you have a new horse or you are unsure of its worming history, it would be a good idea to have a faecal egg count done by your local veterinarian so you are able to effectively treat any worms which may be present.
