Full cheek bits typically are used in young horses who lack balance and direction. The full check pieces can aid in turning and steering the horse. Half cheek bits share a similar purpose and can assist with the turning of the horse. D ring bits also provide a similar effect that full cheek bits too however are a good option for younger riders. D ring bits do prohibit the bit being able to move through the horse's mouth and decrease the possibility of getting caught on anything (which poses a risk with full cheek and half cheek bits) hence being a great option for kids who may not always be conscious of where their pony’s head is.
