We all know how sunscreen is important for us to protect our skin, particularly during the summer months, however it is important that we don’t forget the effects the sun can have on our horses skin as well, particularly those who have pink skin.
Similarly to humans, a sunburnt horse’s skin will go red/dark pink in colour, will be hot to touch and will blister. Sunburn is uncomfortable for us and is uncomfortable for our horses too. Let’s touch on a few ways that you can protect your horse's skin against sun damage.
Those horses who have white muzzles, blaze, star or any sort of white marking on their face, are the most susceptible to sunburn and using a fly mask can assist in sun protection. Fly veils or fly masks, although traditionally used to keep flies off your horse's face, can also provide UV protection for your horse’s sensitive skin. In conjunction with wearing a fly mask, applying a sunblock to the white points of your horse's face, such as NRG No Noze or Filter-Bac, you can rest assured that your horse is best protected from the summer sun.
