The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) has announced new protective riding helmet standards that come into effect from 1 January 2026. These rules are designed to keep riders safer in competition — and if you compete, your helmet must meet the new requirements.
At EQ Saddlery, we stock a wide range of FEI-compliant helmets so you can ride with confidence into 2026 and beyond.
Why the Standards Are Changing
Equestrian sport carries inherent risk, and a helmet is your most important piece of safety equipment. The FEI is updating helmet regulations to make sure riders everywhere have access to the safest, most thoroughly tested helmets on the market.
With advances in helmet technology and stricter quality control, these changes will give riders greater protection and peace of mind.
The FEI Helmet Standards Timeline
2026 – One Accepted Standard Required
From 1 January 2026, all riders must wear helmets that meet at least one FEI-accepted safety standard, such as:
- British PAS 015:2011 (+ updates)
- Snell E2016 or E2021
- CE EN1384:2023
- ASTM F1163:2015 or ASTM F1163:23
- Australian AS/NZ 3838 (2006)
👉 Helmets certified only to older standards (like ASTM 2004a/2013 or Snell E2001) will no longer be accepted.
2027 – Stricter Acceptance
From 1 January 2027, transitional standards will be phased out, leaving only the latest safety certifications valid.
2028 – Dual Standard + Quality Mark
From 1 January 2028, helmets must:
- Meet at least two accepted safety standards
- Display a quality testing mark (such as Snell, SEI, BSI Kitemark, or SAI Global)
This ensures every helmet offers maximum protection and is subject to ongoing quality monitoring.

- Think long-term: Choosing a helmet that already meets 2028 standards saves you money and stress later.
- Get fitted: A helmet must not only comply — it must fit perfectly to protect effectively.
