The classic riding boot has high sides to prevent the leathers of the saddle from pinching the leg of the rider. It has a sturdy toe to protect the rider's foot, and a distinct heel to prevent the foot from slipping through the stirrup. The sole is smooth or lightly textured to avoid being caught on the tread of the stirrup in the event of a fall.
The modern horse riding boot is relatively low-heeled, though some styles of cowboy boots still retain a higher heel for style more than practicality.
There are a number of riding boot variations, intended for different styles of riding. The following options will help determine the right type of boot for you.
Tall riding boots are typically worn by competitors in the showjumping, hunting and dressage disciplines. Ending just below the knee of the rider, they include field, dress and hunt boots, and are standard show apparel. An essential part of any riding outfit, good quality riding boots make a big difference to your comfort and performance.
Field boots were named for their use in the military, but are now popular with riders competing in jumping disciplines like show jumping and eventing. They have lacing at the vamp, which offers greater flexibility and comfort when riding with shorter stirrup lengths. The extra layer of leather on the toe offers further protection.
Worn for pleasure riding and everyday use, jodhpur boots sit above the ankle and are a popular choice for children because they are cheaper to replace than tall boots. Available in lace-up and elastic-sided slip-on styles, they can be worn as a horse riding boot and a dress boot. Heavier versions designed for work are not suitable for equestrian use.
Western boots (or cowboy boots) typically have a Cuban heel, round to pointed toe, high shaft and no lacing.
There are two basic styles:
Classic riding boot - this style has a tall boot shaft ending at mid-calf, with an angled heel. The tall shaft, loose fit and lack of lacing ensures that the rider is protected in the case of falls, freeing the rider even if the boot is stuck in the stirrup. The shaft also prevents chafing and injury from brush and thorns.
Roper riding boot - this newer style has a short boot shaft that stops between the ankle and the middle calf, with a lower and squared-off heel shaped to the sole of the boot. They typically have rounded toes and are manufactured in a lace-up design which often fits better around the ankle and is less likely to slip off.
Popular with dressage riders, eventers in the dressage phase and showjumpers, dress boots are a refined take on the Australian work boot. Available in a range of styles and colours, they are generally stiffer than other boot styles and do not have lacing at the ankle. They are formal enough to be worn in the office and at weekend gatherings.
Safety is essential on work sites and in equestrian environments, and our range of work boots caters to a variety of requirements, with a number of safety features.
Steel toe cap boots - steel caps are a must if you are working with heavy objects, or with heavy animals that might step on your feet. They provide maximum protection against impact, cuts, penetration and rolling forces.
Elastic-sided work boots - the convenience of elastic-sided work boots makes them a popular choice for those working in farms or stables. These pull-on, kick-off boots make it easy to slip them on and off as needed.
Lace up work boots - lace up boots offer personalised comfort, allowing users to adjust the fit as desired. The added snugness means better arch and ankle support, giving much needed relief to workers with low arches or overworked ankles.
Zip up boots - this style is growing in popularity because they combine the convenience of slide-on boots - thanks to a concealed side zip - with the personal and supportive fit of laces. They are great for horse-owners who take their boots on and off all day.
From the music festival to the farm, the humble gumboot is an Aussie staple. Perfect for the farm and stable, this durable rubber footwear is ideal for wear in mud, heavy rain and other messy environments. Today’s gumboots have genuinely evolved into an essential footwear item for reasons of function, comfort and fashion.
